Not a Threat.

Serving vegetable stew for dinner. Its too herbivourous and you don't like it?

Gonna slap you then you know.

No. It's not a threat.

Movements and Outburst

Days pass by in a flurry. Chinese New Year celebrations come and go. Upon venturing into the second month of 2014, I am glad to have trekked up to Genting Highlands, ventured to Perak for sight-seeing and adventures, including the historic remains of Kellie's Castle, the serene and educational hub of UTAR in Kampar, small township bustling with activities famous for its leaning tower Teluk Intan and a tucked away beautiful beach at Telok Batik. Before the month is over, I shall pay another visit to UNESCO heritage site Melacca once again. Since March 2012, I am glad that the turn of events has beefed me up, giving me the opportunity to be more adventurous and mobile.

Lesson learnt: Move forward bravely. It is totally OK to be tentative at first. Push through despite baby steps on rough waves; eventually what is left from the past will be just a history together with moral values fit for learning. Everyone, every group, every team, every organization has their own destiny.

DICTATORSHIP is the word that caught my attention when meeting up a friend recently. In addition, the urge to splurge has also some what became a very bad habit of this particular group. Chills still gripped me everytime these updates came by. Aside from praying hard, we can only hope for the best. Without revelations, enlightenment and the right talents - tracing the same tracks and getting lost in circles seems to sum it all.

Young talents with vigor, talents and burning passion kindled within is quick to be snatched up. Am happy for my little friend whom grasped a new sense of belonging despite being thrashed out and left abandoned after he is drained of all efforts.

饮水还需思源,可偏偏满嘴正义为民者却不如一个黄毛小子,尽干上不了台面的事。

Festive Revelations |

Top 5 Questions I don't like during CNY

Question number ONE,
"Eh, you still studying arh? Which uni liao? When graduate ha?"

OS in my heart:

Diplomatic reply:
Ha..ha..ha... ya lorh. Soon. Soon. Got liao bring back let you see ha. I am still very young mah.

Question number THREE, (related to above question)
"When getting married? When your turn to give ang pow ha?"

OS in my heart:

Bumped into a schoolmate and his mother who is the vice-principal of my primary school during New Year eve, Madam Wong commented that I seemed to be not growing any taller as compared to 13 years ago. *sobzzz*

Mom was gleeful upon hearing this. Not only that she agrees with Madam Wong, but she said I pressed the wrong button. Instead of the button "GOING UP"; I pressed the one that says ”GO SIDE-WAYS”!

Seeking Inspiration at the Mountain Top

Sleeping sun or not, sipping a hot cuppa Black Tea Latte admist the super chilly weather at Genting Highlands was a blissful thing to do! People-watching at First World Plaza's Starbucks while getting inspired for an on-going project and chewing away crispy, hot fried durians was a weird thing to do, but oh-well: IT WAS FUN!!

Tottering around in the chilly and misty atmosphere with a temperature that was below 15 degree celcius without my coat earned me a new title: A Penguin back to its own Habitat! (no, i am not silly Pingu!)

The fog swallowed the First World Hotel Towers! Sejjjjuuuukkkkkk, but nice!

Sanity Debate

I must admit, it was an interesting turn of events.

It was a whirlwind of a meet up and the progress was somehow too fast too furious. Confused with the amount of interest shown? You bet. Sanity and clarity barely clung on in that torrential 120 minutes.

Observing Ordinary Orang at the Kopi Tiam

Was at the Kopi Tiam the other morning for a wholesome breakfast before heading back home for a quiet weekend.

It was a public holiday for the Thaipusam celebrations, needless to say, the Kopi Tiam was crowded with merry folks of old and young.

After having a hearty good meal of Kopi Bing gao gao and Chu Yuk Fan (pork noodles), I decided to start people-watching while waiting for my companion to finish up her meal.

"I like people like that. Making an honest living. Kan bagus." My friend raised her eyebrows at my random thoughts (rants, more like.)

The stall selling my favourite Chu Yuk Fan is run by this middle-aged Chinese couple. The husband huffs and puffs away frying Yong Tau Fu, mincing onion stalks and boiling soups. The wife, a petite lady supporting a ponytail will help to serve the dishes and collect money from the customers. It was when I glanced up, saw a satisfied and happy smile on the lady's face upon collecting the payment from one of her customers that I realized - people who make an honest living like this are worth all the respect. They might not be in tailor-made pants and suits working in air-conditioned rooms behind LCD screens, but they are definitely part of the strong pillars that hold up the society.

Bien salute.

Then, this macho and ruff looking man who sat at the next table caught my attention when he started talking on the phone. From his paint-tainted coveralls, worn boots and very tanned skin, I am guessing that he is either a construction worker or a plumber or an electrician. When he spoke, the voice and language was gruff and awkward but the conversation certainly brought a smile to my lips. A rough and tough man, asking the person at the other end of the phone conversation whether he/she has recovered from the cold; putting on a tough demeanor while chastisising the person to take their medication on time, to rest and to take care of themselves etcetera etcetera.

Despite looking all burly, tough, and manly - he certainly is sweet and sensitive. His tan covered up his blush well, I must say. Caring guys are a rare find nowadays eh.

There's also stall owners who are the best gymnasts with superb balancing acts with their pots, pans, containers, trays and ladles.

There's waiters who took orders with clear, loud and sing song voice that can be heard through out the whole restaurant. Whatever beverage you ordered - be it Milo Bing, Teh C, Cham Bing or Barley Suam - everyone in the restaurant is informed as the waiters shout their orders from different corners.

I like Kopi Tiams. Food is good. The crowd and buzz is always there.

Round 2 #tehtarik

For the past three days, #kangkung (water spinach) made its special debut and jumped to fame thanks to Mr PM.

We have,
  • "Keep Calm and Eat Kangkung" shirts
  • "Kangkung Remix ft. PM" songs and phone ringtones
  • "Kangkung Burger Set" by Smashies Burger

and even Artisan Roast Coffee is offering their customers to buy black coffee with kangkung during a limited time sale. Kangkung is certainly trending not only in the virtual platforms like Twitter, Facebook and Instagram - but also the talk of the town in coffee shops, offices etc.

Source: Malaysiakini.com

Now that people are getting tired of the overrated kangkung, round two is certainly coming. Bet on it people! Will it be #tehtarik or #quail ? Personally, I put my hands down for the former!

Stay Real

Ever had THAT one dream that made you feeling so happy and fuzzy that you woke up with a sheepish smile - then you would roll over and pretend to fall asleep again, secretly wishing for a part two/ continuation of the dream?

After 3 excruciating years did the feeling surface itself again. And though it's gnawing away my senses, it's not so bad after all. Scritchy, scratchy ... something furry pawing away, the feeling itself is bittersweet.

Die also Not Cheap!

With the price hike and escalation in Malaysia - it is of no surprise that coffin prices also joining the bandwagon.

A friend's grandfather passed away recently (RIP grandpa!) and his Facebook post mentioned the funeral service fees that also went on a rampant hike.

And then, one of Malaysia's Chinese dailies is seen reporting this,

Source: China Press

Price tags on coffins used for cremation purpose is going up as well. From what used to cost between RM200 to RM300, now it costs between RM300 to RM400.

Another friend commented this on her Facebook:

现在么都起连死都难逃一切劫
(Translation: Everything going for a raise, even die we also can't escape)

All in all, die also not cheap nowadays.

The best thing one can do if we are really poor is not to die, but eating kangkung is a better option.

Wahlao! #Kangkung

Vege of the Day: KANGKUNG!!

PM said kangkung's price dropped.
But everything else going up.

The video is now spreading like wildfire, it kept resurfacing on my Facebook home - I am not surprise if the hashtag #kangkung is trending on Twitter.

So yay, a toast to KANGKUNG!!
Am not a big fan but if you are suffering from price hike, kangkung seems to be a better option.

Captivated by the Brazilian Mojo

Heard this got featured on Capital FM's weekend segment - Global Passport. And, the effect was instantaneous. I fell in love.

Ela Partiu sung by Tim Maia

Ela partiu
Estou cansado
Magoado exausto
E nunca mais voltou

(Translation)

She's gone
Gone and she hasn't come back
She disappeared, disappeared and hasn't come back if you know where she is
Tell me and I'll go and find her
At least call me up on her behalf
Give me a hint, a clue, I'm begging you She's gone
Gone and she hasn't come back
She's gone, gone
And she hasn't come back
She disappeared, disappeared and will never come back
If I knew where she went, I'd go and look for her
But I don't know which way to turn
So many nights that I can't sleep even for a second
I'm tired
Hurt, exhausted
And she hasn't come back

Cupid's Arrow: Past, Now, Future

Says Alicia to me,

I have never heard of a person who is love-struck but unhappy.
You are the first.

*looks down, twiddling thumbs*

Insecurity issues of the past? Indeed. Without letting go of the past, there's no looking forward to the future.
----------------------------------------------------------

And I could use a little distraction. Or so I thought.

A road trip to commemorate and relive the past. A conclusion to be drawn.

The upside, insecurity issues are in the past - that's to be sure. A new face replaced the old, ill-feelings are no longer harbored. There's so much to look forward to! Uncharted waters, yes; but endless opportunities too.

The downside, not much progress with new face. Que sera sera? I wonder.

Money-spending in Malaysia, today vs. a week ago

First week into 2014 and we decided to have our dinner at the hawker stalls. And that was when I really felt the pinch. Okay. Pinch is an understatement. A wild, painful twist. Gory? Not quite... but brutal.

Chicken rice was RM6.50. I felt like tearing up.
A week ago it was still RM5 to RM5.50?

Leungsui and a fruit juice cost RM4.80. Am totally baffled.
Leungsui used to be RM1.20 and fruit juice, RM2.50?

And I told Alicia (a good pal, she will be one of my frequent mentions in the blog!),

When we dine at Chili's, TGI's, or Nandos - though it's pricey food but the hike don't really hit us because we anticipated the price tags that come with the brand. Plus, it is usually a celebration or a gathering when we do dine at classy restaurants. You have already anticipated the bill and would have slap a RM50 note when it comes.

Realisation hits HARD when we actually eat-out at hawker stalls.

Telling Stories of Yasmin Ahmad, the Storyteller

First, it started off with Sepet. One of my lecturers and mentors - Mr Abel played the movie during one of his Mass Comm lessons... and I have a faint memory of myself sobbing with a smile tugging at the lips when the credits rolled.

Then Gubra. It's an extension to Sepet which I am so fond of.

Then I went on for Mukhsin. So sweet and pure. Real, even.

Muallaf. Can't help but sobbed away.

Talentime. Was so hooked to the OSTs at one time.

Beloved, respected, talented, sweet and gentle Yasmin Ahmad.
You will be missed forever more.
Happy Birthday.

Al-Fatihah.

One of my favourite songs by Yasmin. "Keroncong Hujan"

Mega mendung di angkasa
Hembusan bayu dingin terasa
Gerimis berderai di merata
Bagai mutiara

(Swirls of dark clouds in the sky
 Feeling the billowing cool breeze
 The drizzling came crumbling down
 Like fallen pearls)

Rahmat dibawa bersama
Limpahannya meresap jiwa
Adakala bahgia terasa
Meskipun duka nestapa

(Bringing together the blessings
Overflowing and seeping into every soul
 Sometimes happiness is felt
 Even during testing times)

Tika hujan turun
Sayup mendayu hujan keroncong
Merdu irama dialun
Bersenandung

(When the rain falls
Playing a faint and melancholic tune
 A melodious rhythm is strung
 And hummed)

Hujan membasahi bumi
Melahirkan keluhuran budi
Mengeratkan perpaduan suci
Kasih sayang abadi

(The rainfall wets the Earth
 Expressing its magnanimity
 Forging sincere ties and unity
 Of undying and eternal love)

Ain't running but a singing man: Lee Kwang Soo Fan Meeting Malaysia

And the three ladies went running to meet Lee Kwang Soo of Running Man.

Lady A: I think I watched one or two episodes before.
Lady B: Oh, cos' I got complimentary tickets. So, who wanna go with me?
Lady C: Running Man! Not my favourite, but he will do!

Nevertheless, the Running Ladies trio went ahead to attend Lee Kwang Soo Fan Meeting in Malaysia 2013 at KWC Fashion Mall.

Huge, towering, fluffy (?), like a polar bear - was my first impression of Lee Kwang Soo.

Although he is affectionately known as the 'Giraffe' by his fans. Due to this, there's a lot of giraffes running around the place. Giraffe headgears complete with blinking lights, giraffe floating balloons, giraffe jackets, giraffe jumpsuits, giraffe bags, giraffe plushies - I kinda enjoy watching the crowd of giraffe-look-a-likes gathering at the fan meeting. Oh. So this is what a Korean fan meeting looks like. Interesting.

Personally, I love the emcee more. Talented and fun Baki. Proficient in multi-languages, still quirky as ever and his sudden Ya Allah! Baru naik pentas nak peluk lagi! Berdiri tepi dulu!

It was a nice experience. Was reminiscing the fact that, back then when I was still at the age of chasing after celebs and stars, I do not have the financial support or connections to gain access to the concerts or fan meetings that I would love to go. When I am actually out of it, complimentary tickets or special accesses came by so often that I attend just for the fun of it.

Definitely not a case of showing off. *smirks*

"You would do great alone."
"I'm relying on you for my words and content management moving onward."

Altoids to the Rescue, Unblocking the Writer's Block

Today is a dry spell. Stifling weather together with a writer's block ain't the best combination in the world.

Really.

Hit the bottleneck while working on some translation projects and my only remedy is the metal tin of Altoids mint candies. At least they made me feel better.

Slightly better. After all, "For 3 days in 1924, Altoids were stronger than the U.S. Dollar".

---------------------- FREE TALK ----------------------

Reflecting back on 2013, it was a year with endless transitions, surprises - both pleasant and unpleasant ones, opportunities, obstacles and challenges, and blessings.

It was a year of great gatherings with the Downstairs Gang. Though most of us left, but our friendship survived the separation, I'm glad. I became an Aunty Pillow to little Dina, whom I referred to as a cool baby; as cool as both the parents. An adorable and surprising low-maintenance gem!

Next, got jaded and tricked by the typical businessman-employer. Nasty ordeal, but I suppose everyone gotta learn their life lessons somehow. Things didn't work out, fortunately it lasted only for a brief period of time. The saddest part? Break an arm - lost a friend.

And then, an opportunity presents itself. Things gradually pick-up and eventually ends with a big bang. It wasn't really a bed of roses but it was perhaps the most blatant display of behavioral change that I ever witness in such a short span of time. Then again, a dear friend reminded me this: Are you referring to animals or humans? If its the latter - then don't be surprise.

It was a year of outings and travelling. From island hopping in Krabi, Thailand to Brunei, the land of gold palace tops and the Abode of Peace - to Penang foodie trip, chillaxing session at Bukit Merah Laketown Resort etc. The extreme sunburn that made the doctor snickered - everyone kept telling me that I resembled a lobster just came out from the soup; the solo travelling that got me an earful from mom; the wanderings and gatherings that strengthen friendships - it was most memorable.

It was a year of meeting great and not-so-great people. Good-natured and supportive ones. Calculative and full with hidden agenda ones. Gentleman turn disaster ones. Friends who became potential partners. Haughty-mighty ones. Those who can't write proper English but use-it-to-threaten-people-anyway ones. Is it possible that my Mr Right is in the list? You bet. Hopefully Santa grants my Christmas wish for 2013!

It was a year of meeting new, lovely people whom eventually sparks fly and became very dear friends.

It was a year of losing that special touch and connection with few former war mates.

It was a year of attending star-studded private functions. It was a year of special entrance passes and VIP tickets to 'live' shows and concerts. It was also a year to have a better insight into productions and back-stage management.

All in all - 2013 is fruitful. A year of endless transitions.

My wishlist for 2014?

More writings. (More rantings?)
Santa granting my Christmas wish. (Blushes)
Lesser transitions, and a more-focused environment and scope.
Travel to Myanmar to see Pagodas and experience the Jakarta traffic jam.
A healthier me. (Mom's nagging is way too scary to forget!)

God bless.

With the in-coming good news - I look forward to a great 2014!

Now, back to unblocking my writer's block. Meh.

Victory Return in 2014, I think I surprised Myself - meh!

Can't believe I'm actually on hiatus from June 2011 to Jan 2014!!
I think the gap of the break is wider than potholes on Malaysian roads.. Or not.

2014 is a year for writing (nope, not just another new year resolution kind-off thing) - I mean, serious writing. More writing. Content writing. Script writing. Website writing. Copy writing. You-name-it writing.
